You will find Said the Eagle on the Never Forever album

Said the Eagle

Sometime in 2020, I was cruising through my computer files of poems and I came across this one. Apparently, I wrote it way back in April of 2001 - practically 20 years ago. I had been in the USA for 9 years by that time and had formed this opinion of the place by then. When I found it in 2020, it still expressed my feelings. I find our dependency on symbolism to be strange.

I really like this song musically.

C                                 C
Said the Eagle to the American man
Am                              Am
I hear you revere my strength and my élan
F                                  Dm      Dm7
I can hear your lofty songs of Praise
G                                 G
For me, I hear your voices raise.

I see my image on your walls
You say I’m your guardian when evil calls
You salute and sing to strengthen your will
To prevail against your own grinding mill.

You strain to see me high in the tree
You need to see me fly and be free
You get assurance and comfort by my grace
I give you second wind for your race.

I look down from my place high in the skies
From here, I see the whites of your eyes
You look unhealthy, sad and obese
Aging too young from too much disease.

You revere me, but you take my food,
Poison my air and cut my wood
You honor me but pollute my water
You leave a trail of senseless slaughter

Think of me as you wish, dear ones
Believe as you will with my face on your guns
For me, American, I see you busted
You are mean in spirit and not to be trusted.

 Instrumetal Verse

I look away, you’re of no interest to me.
You are not food. I have young to feed.
I scour the fields and waters below
Where there is food, I will find it and go.

For I revere a God of my own
She is Nature herself and all that she’s known
As timeless and warm as the Sun has been
She rules our lives. I suggest you join in.
