The Passenger

Somehow, I just got into a story about picking up a hitchhiker (or encountering in any way) - a girl who just captures your heart and you fall and you fall and you fall. Quickly, your grasp on reality is stripped away until….

I actually recall having the intention of a happy ending to the story but, that changed by the time I got to writing an end. I think I was swept up in the imaginary hope but sobered up at the last minute as the story describes. It’s a common story and a pleasant song.

She said, “Take me where you will”

She sat beside me at the wheel

She smiled and said, “Anywhere you can!”

And then she touched me on the hand.

She’s beautiful like sunshine
She smelled like a field of flowers
We left all yesterdays behind
It felt like tomorrow was ours

Stories rolled off our tongues
Laughter and perfume filled my lungs
Miles and miles kept passing by
And the Sun rolled across the sky

I never told her where we’re going
She never asked. No need for knowing
Our destination pushed ‘round each bend
I hoped our time to never end

Chorus

I could tell tomorrow was ours

We agreed to rest ‘til mornin’
“Share a room if there’s no snorin’ ”
Heaven sent light from above
The Angels sang while we made love

Morning brought us face to face
All my plans were now erased
Our night’s passion became a bond
I want for naught. Here, we belong

Chorus

I knew tomorrow was ours

Instrumental Verse

Hands on the wheel, pedal to the floor
She fell asleep. I fell for her more
Countless miles passed far behind us
I dreamed that no one would find us

She awoke, this girl of mine
“Please stop here. This will be fine.”
I watched her leave. Girl on the run.
“Thanks for the lift. I hope you had fun.”

She was beautiful like sunshine
She smelled like a field of flowers
She smiled and left me behind
What was ours was now just mine.
