Not all Angels are human

You will find this angelic gem on the “that guy” album

AND, you can hear the angels here on YouTube

Where are the Angels?

I was struggling to get an idea to sound at all worthwhile. The story and the music that I was trying was blah so, I deleted it all. Gone! And I just wrote a ‘title’ by pulling the first idea that came into my spacious head. “Where are the Angels?” I don’t know why that came to mind but, it was enough to work with.

Maybe I said this elsewhere, don’t remember and I’m not going to look but, my usual song creation process starts with lyrics - a story. I rarely start with the music and a melody. Once I have a story to tell, I create a chord progression that I think suits the story. Then, I find the melody and harmonies within those chords.

Am        Am        Em  E    Am

Am              C                Em  Em7            Am
I listen to the trees to find peace in the breeze
Am              Am7             G                      Em
And ask that its magic “stay longer with me, please”
F          Dm    Dm7          G         C
Touch ancient walls and I recall a time
Am                   Bb7                   Em   E   Am
When long gone people said, “This World is mine.”
Am        Am        Em  E    Am

I listen to ocean waves to hear the Siren Song
And ask myself if I have been wrong all along
Cathedrals and castles, monuments to power
Blind to tenements where forgotten souls cower

I look to the sky on the still, silent night
And ask what it takes to understand it right
Meaning less is meaningless, stars may be nothing
And I need Angels to explain everything

Instrumental verse                       Em       E

C                      G          Am        G
I was lost in the trees, the oceans, the sky
Dm                   F          Bb                    G
Where answers escape me ‘til I give up and cry
C                      Caug     C6                    C7
I look in the wrong places when I’m on my own
F                      Bb7       B7                                E
My Angels are the ones who say, “You’re not alone”
Am        Am        Em  E    Am

So, I have my Angels, some are pretty, some are old
Some drink beer, some are near, some live where it’s cold
All of them are friends of mine. One is my wife.
Angels like these give meaning to my life.

When you’re lost in the trees, the oceans, the sky
And answers escape you and you don’t know why
You’re looking in the wrong places when you’re on your own
Your Angels are the ones who don’t leave you alone.
